What is it?

Global Health Drinks presents “Medical aid missions: the good, the bad and the evidence”

It’s our last event for 2012 and we are going out with a bang! Joel Negin, will lend his considerable expertise and drop in for a bit of global health controversy on “Medical aid missions – the good, the bad and the evidence”. It’s going to be a great talk. We’d love you to join us for a drink, a bit of inspiration and an opportunity to hang out with a vibrant global health community in Sydney.

Joel Negin is a Senior Lecturer in International Public Health at the University of Sydney. He has worked in a number of countries including Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, and the Solomon Islands on various health and development projects for UN agencies, government departments and academic institutions.

The talk will be followed by an interactive discussion where you will be invited to share your thoughts, experiences and anecdotes on the topic and global health projects in general.

It has been a great year for Global Health Drinks and we want to celebrate that too. We have chosen this format for our last event so we can also have some time to get to know each other. So come along, be inspired and challenged and have an opportunity to meet and network with the Global Health Drinks community.

If you’re interested in exploring opportunities to volunteer, work or undertake research in the developing world come along and be inspired! All are welcome.

Dr Phoebe Williams – A journey woman in her own right. After an undergraduate degree in Development Economics, Phoebe went onto study Medicine where her passion for global health sparked the formation of “Hands of Help”, an NGO working to improve health through education. Phoebe’s journey down the road less travelled has taken her across outback Australia, through much of Africa, and to the hallowed halls of Oxford University and the World Health Organisation.

Introduction

What a great night it was on Thursday 6th September! Global Health Drinks were very privileged to have 2 amazing speakers come and take us through their journeys of “a road less travelled”. Indeed both have accolades and accomplishments to spare and it wasn’t before long that everybody realised were in the company of 2 incredibly unique individuals who have been brave enough to follow their passions and go beyond the beaten track in medicine.

Dr Phoebe Williams began the night with her story of how her journey started with an unexpected turn whilst she was holidaying in Africa. After that initial encounter (which also rounded off her undergraduate degree in development economics), it left her hungry for more and as a medical student she was self determined enough to fundraise over $100,000 and rally up other students to join her in establishing “Hands of Help”: an NGO who’s aim was to provide support and assistance in education to primary school aged children, then later, public health initiatives. Phoebe spoke of small challenges (the ‘jigger’ fleas that haunt children’s feet) and greater challenges (like trying to convince other NGOs to partner with). After establishing Hands of Help (and all the while still managing and running it) she proved it is possible to do it all and also managed to finish a Masters of International Public Health at Oxford University, a WHO internship, yet another project in Africa, and on top of it all given birth to and raising triplets! She currently has her sights set on paediatrics training and is still heavily involved in global & public health in whatever spare time she conjures.

Dr Sam Prince was an equal match in impressiveness with his multitudes of achievements- he opened up his own restaurant at age 21 whilst in medical school, and is now an entrepreneur, philanthropist, aid worker and founder of the NGO “One Disease at a Time”- an organisation that works on the principle that by focusing skills, knowledge, and resources on one particular disease, in addition with working closely with a community, a disease with a significant burden can be completely eradicated from that population. Sam spoke of the need to ‘first do no harm’ and not make the mistake of disempowering local communities by not allowing them to be a part of or take ownership of projects. He told incredible stories of his hard-working, resilient mother who inspired him, and others of fateful chance encounters with individuals that surprisingly changed the course of his life. Throughout, he urged us all to be aware of that “fire” inside of us and to take courage to listen to and act upon it- a belief which has gotten him to where he is today.

Both speakers spoke sincerely about their experiences, and opened up about their personal thoughts and struggles. And both were in agreement that perseverance and dedication are necessary in getting the job done. We were captivated by their stories and will think of their words for many days to come, as their work and passion for global health continues to inspire and encourage others to do the same.

Q&A

Thanks to our sponsors who made the night possible.
